Digging Deeper::Public Documents + Shoe Leather Reporting = The Smoking Gun's Staying Power

Wed, 23 Apr 2008 15:25:43 PDT
In a world of social network widgets, videoblogs and Web 2.0 gewgaws, sometimes it’s the simple things that work best. That’s the lesson of Web 1.0 startup The Smoking Gun, a simply designed site that relies on public documents and criminal mugshots to bring in boatloads of traffic. If a prominent politician or celebrity has run afoul of the law, chances are good that The Smoking Gun will have a mugshot, lawsuit brief or other document to provide the gory details. The best news to come out of Philadelphia - or rather Indiana - is that Obama appears to have finally started campaigning against McCain. In New Albany, Indiana, (just across the river from Louisville) today, Obama made clear that he's moved on to the general election. U.S. Sen. Barack Obama told a cheering crowd at Indiana University Southeast today that the Democratic Party will be unified - whichever candidate is ultimately successful - in its effort to defeat the Republican presumptive nom

Very clever. It doesn’t wo
